The concept of spatial order (SO) and spatial degrees of freedom (SDOF) permits an unambiguous definition of manipulator redundancy and non-redundancy. Task spaces and task space singularities depict a manipulator’s motion capability in different configuration space manifolds. The theory introduces the notion of a configuration dependent workspace boundary, which necessarily includes the workspace boundary, but not vice-versa. A methodology for mapping the configuration dependent workspace boundaries into cartesian boundaries demonstrates how the manipulator loses differential motion capability on cartesian surfaces not normally associated with a workspace boundary.

Design and Kinematic Analysis of a 4-DOF Serial-Parallel Manipulator for a Driving Simulator

This paper presents the kinematic analysis and the development of a 4-degree-of-freedom serial-parallel mechanism for large commercial vehicle driving simulators. The degrees of freedom are selected according to the target maneuvers and the structure of human motion perception organs. Several kinematic properties of parallel part of the mechanism under study are investigated, including the inve...

Uncertainty Singularity Analysis of Parallel Manipulators Based on the Instability Analysis of Structures

When all the inputs of a parallel manipulator (PM) are locked, the manipulator is usually turned into a structure. When an uncertainty singularity occurs for a PM, the latter structure is unstable or, in other words, it may undergo infinitesimal or finite motion. Hence, the investigation of the uncertainty singularities of a PM can be reduced to the instability analysis of its corresponding str...

Maximal Operational Workspace of Parallel Manipulators

Parallel manipulators are an interesting alternative to serial robots given the important mechanical and kinematic advantages offered. Nevertheless, they often present more complex and smaller workspaces with internal singularities (Altuzarra et al., 2004; Gosselin & Angeles, 1990). Thus, the workspace size, shape and quality are considered some of the main design criteria of these robots (Merl...

Singularities of manipulators with non-unilateral constraints

An analytical method is presented to obtain all surfaces enveloping the workspace of a general n degree-of-freedom mechanism with non-unilateral constraints. The method is applicable to kinematic chains that can be modeled using the Denavit-Hartenberg representation method for serial kinematic chains or its modification for closed-loop kinematic chains. The method developed is based upon analyt...

Trajectory Planning for Constrained Parallel Manipulators

This paper presents an algorithm for generating trajectories for multi-degree of freedom spatial linkages, termed constrained parallel manipulators. These articulated systems are formed by supporting a workpiece, or end-effector, with a set of serial chains, each of which imposes a constraint its movement. Our goal is to plan trajectories for systems that have workspaces ranging from two throug...
